Dielectric Spectroscopy

Dielectric spectroscopy is a very powerful tool to study the static and dynamic properties of polar compounds

Permanent dipoles experiment molecular relaxations in the microwave region, when an alternate electric field is applied.

In our lab we have a SR850 DSP lock-in amplifier. This is a vectorial voltimeter, which allows the automatic and simultaneous determination of both components of the dielectric permittivity: in phase (real component) and out-of-phase (imaginary component). The available frequency range goes from 10-1 Hz to 105 Hz. The finest care should be taken when calibrating the equipment, as there is frequency dependence of the phase shift between both components, so this must be corrected. The available temperatures range from -80 ºC to 600 ºC.
